Light

Albert Schweitzer, a theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary, wrote “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us” which certainly reminds me that this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine and be grateful.

How often do you hear someone say “these times are changing” or “times are not what they used to be” or “back in my day…”  I certainly use them now myself, and I am only 43 years young.  The world I live in IS still the same as it was when I was 5 years old.  The people have changed, the culture has changed, and yes, I have changed too.

There have been times in my life that my light went out, heck it didn’t just go out, it was stomped out, blew out, watered out, dried out, put out, cut out, and burned out!  Or at least I thought at the time.  Then a card, letter, phone call, email, text, touch, tear, prayer, or other spiritual connection happened and it was lit just like that.  Nothing less than a very small spark was all it took to rekindle my light into a glowing, bright, powerful, loving, generating, life light.

It took a few life lessons for me to get that.  It took a few hits with that 2x4 to get that.  It took me getting older for my mom to get smarter… J

I am glad that my eyes of my eyes and the ears of my ears respond today as they do.  It has allowed my heart of hearts and my mind of minds to absorb the knowledge, love, power and life that those many lighter sharers have shared with me so far.  Thank you, thank you.  Thank you!

I CAN BE THE CHANAGE I SEEK IN THIS WORLD…  We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

I offer the following  prayer “Universal God of life, love and spirit we ask that you help us be mindful gardeners of life who understand that without light nothing flowers, without rain nothing grows, and without love nothing lives.  In  your precious names we pray and give thanks, AMEN.”

Songs That Say Something

A song that spoke to me this morning was “O Light of Life” “O light of love, rain down on us, help us to heal our wounded world, our dying forests, gutted plains, smoldering cities, wasted fields.  Save us, save our children.”  Let us all open our eyes, reach out at listen and stand together in strength to make it better.

Service

We have more kindness inside us, than we have shared.  We welcome those we know at work and in our homes.  What about those on the street?  Those whom we don’t know.  Those next to us in church that look different, sound different, dress different, talk different?  Follow you heart to extend kindness and hospitality, your heart knows!

It is easy to talk the talk.  It is easy to be “good” for one day each week in front of others.  When your worship ends does your service REALLY begin?  At work; how do you welcome a new person or treat someone who is going through a crisis?  Do you know your neighbor?  How do you interact with your family?  When you walk down the street and see a person who does not; smell like you, dress like you, or look like you… do you assume that they are homeless, without skills, lazy, entitlement seekers?

I know we are not perfect people, we have flaws and we all should strive to live good lives.  What we do with the knowledge of our imperfections says a lot about us.  Do we ignore them and say I am who I am, I am what I am and I do what I do either like or don’t?  Or do we try to learn, grow and seek wisdom, enlightenment, knowledge that allows us the space and passion to make adjustments in how we live, what we do and how we do it?

We can be the change we seek in this world…  I can remember that the most important journey I may take is meeting someone halfway.

Earth

Alan Eddison shared with us that “Modern technology owes ecology an apology!”  I remember growing up and watching the commercial that showed the Indian standing next to a polluted and trashed river with a single tear running down his face.  Other than laws and corporate reforms how do we motivate each other to be better stewards of our world?  We must not blow it, good planets are hard to find!

Three years ago, Beth Terry, like many other Americans chose double plastic bags, threw the plastic bottles in the trash and ate frozen dinners -- generating about 100 lbs of plastic waste a year. But after seeing a photo of the sea being filled with plastic products, she resolved to live a plastic free life. From January to November 2010, she generated less than 2 pounds of plastic waste. And she went further. Beth discovered that Clorox's US Brita water filters are recycled in Europe. 7 months, 16,000 signatures and 600 filters later, Beth successfully petitioned Clorox. Beth asks, "What difference can one person make?" Most of all, one person who reduces their plastic waste is motivated to drive for systemic change. As Beth states in her TEDx video, "We have the power to change the menu that's offered to us."

We can be the change we seek in this world…  It starts with one change we EACH make in our life, then another, and encourage others to do the same.

Coins

What kind of coins do we use?  Placing blame and being a victim are two sides of the same bad coin.  When we keep using that coin to pay for things in our life, it is us unforeseeable that we will start using coins of opportunity, possibility, change…  I can be the change I seek in this world…  I will take personal responsibility for my own words, thoughts, and actions.

It is easy to blame others, companies, the government, our families and organizations for hurdles or problems in our world/life (ESPECIALLY after watching our government leaders do it with each other on TV last night!)  It is also easy to create a nice comfortable, secure, and safe “victim” bed to sleep in.
There are times in life when we are not treated fairly, times are tough (perhaps rough!), and when life is really difficult to get through each day AND it will continue to spiral out of control if you allow it, if you let it, if you do not take 100% personal responsibility for your actions,  your words and your thoughts.

If you think you are a failure, you will be.  If you say you are failure, you are.  If you do nothing to change the perception that you are a failure, then you must be one!  You are the author of your life, what are you writing?  What are saying?  What are you doing?  YOU CAN BE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK IN YOURSELFLove yourself enough to care!

Who can individuals, couples and families turn to when they need care & services traditionally found by a place of worship?  US!  We are Inclusive Life, and we serve all without exception.  We know that up to 70% of the population in America does not attend worship on a regular basis, so we are here to provide care & services to everyone regardless of they attend worship or not.  Wedding Officiant’s-Premarital & Couples Coaching-Funeral Ministers-Pastoral Care.

Community

Where there is life, we have the obligation & ability to identify, nurture & create beauty.  Perhaps it is cleaning up graffiti, or picking up trash, cleaning up a park, removing abandoned objects, providing a fresh coat of pain, planting trees or flowers, or…  There are many ways we can make our yards, neighborhoods, communities and cities a place of beauty.  What have you done for your community lately?

We can, should and have made a difference.  But there is always more to do.  You perhaps finished your project, agenda or vision.  Are there others who might need your experience, passion, wisdom?  YES!  Sometimes others need that nudge to help see what has been done, what can be done, with their help what WILL be done J

Our neighborhoods, communities, cities, and world is not going to change without us connecting as a people, uniting in spirit, focus and abilities.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I will remember that there is more to be done and will KEEP helping after project (x) is done.

Seeing Faith

“Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe.” St. Augustine.  I believe that faith is something we don’t see (as we see colors, trees, people, and animals.) Perhaps for some faith is also about what we feel & experience.  Some might explain much with science (which is ok) but in my journey of faith, I have experienced gifts that can only be explained by faith.

Science AND faith can explain many things for many people.  For me, many times in my life I have experienced what I believe to be spiritual gifts when praying with and for others.  Perhaps it is “knowing” specifically the issue that someone has without them telling me, perhaps it is the ability to have the right words for the right person at the right time (when they are words that I would not normally use) or perhaps it is the power of listening that allows someone the gift of self reflection and awareness.

I offer this prayer today for us all… “God of love, life and light grant us the passion to share our gifts we have been given since birth.  Let us encourage, embrace and love our brothers, sisters and strangers.  Let the earth cure me, the rock strengthen me, the rain wash me, and the sun provide the light to see to continue my walk.”  AMEN

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I will be reminded that those which protect and nourishes their integrity and spiritual freedom; will discover radiant signatures of the infinite spirit and their own enlightenment.

Life

In our life journey we make choices and are a part of choices that were made with us, for us and without us.  It is right to remember the names of those who inspired us, gave us strength, loved us and gave us light to see.  They have become a part of the tapestry of our life and with them we have a more meaningful life.
It has been said that people (friends, family, co-workers, faith family, neighbors…) come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime.  The focus should not be on who is staying and why or who is leaving and why.  The focus should be on learning, sharing and caring with those around you.  When it is their time to go or your time to move on it will happen.
This weekend two friends of mine had to say goodbye to family members.  A reminder I share with everyone is that you have permission; you have a blessing you have the right to smile, live and laugh.  Grief is a cycle that we all certainly will share and go through when death occurs AND through that journey we must be reminded (and sometimes be given permission) that it is healthy, healing and appropriate to recall fond times, good times, loving times, funny times.  It is okay to tell jokes and feel good despite the difficult circumstances.
I offer this prayer today for us all… “May the blessing of truth, love and life be with us all in a time of loss.  May we hold on to what is good, what we believe, and what we must do.  Let us hold on to one another in these times for strength, love, community and life.  May we be reminded that sorrow will one day turn to joy and that all the breaks of the heart will be mended with peace and understanding.  Now, may we all go in peace, love abundantly, live simply, and be gentle with one another.  Amen”

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I remember that life is next to me, besides me, above me and below me, it is always with me.

Three Words

Hospitality, Joy & Kindness… We can practice hospitality in a world where too often strangers are feared, we should welcome guests.  When we live life with joy it allows us to rejoice & be exceedingly glad. Find this divine energy in your daily life and share it with others.  And kindness in our heart allows us to let the spirit flow through in little acts of kindness, brief words of encouragement.

Hospitality can be practiced at home, work, in the neighborhood, at a place of worship, while shopping, while on vacation!  Think of that time that you might have been without, alone, lost, the new person, or…(?)  How did you feel?  Perhaps someone showed you hospitality, and maybe not.  Regardless of our income levels, education levels or life experiences we ALL are capable of giving, sharing and providing hospitality.

We have the choice to live with or without joy in our lives, as we are the authors of our own life stories.  I have found, trying both ways, that living with joy, for me, is a far more rewarding path of life than not.  I encourage  you to examine  your life and add a little joy.

Kindness is part of being the change that we make in this world.  With regard to greed, power, money and seems that kindness was left out of that equation.   Put it back in and make a difference today.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  There is no hospitality like understanding

Virtue

David Jordan shared “Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, and virtue is doing it.”  Regardless of the journey; our personal life, life at work, faith journey, political movement, family, community, world… we need to, right now, engage our wisdom, skills and virtue.  One by one we could make a difference; as a group we will make a difference!

I can be the change I seek in this world…  An hour, a day, a project I will accept responsibility for the welfare of my world, my community, my life.  I will engage!

Making a difference

"I am only one, but still I am one.  I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.  And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.”  I am beautiful, loved and worthy, just the way I am AND I help make this world a better place.

Expectations, life, choices, peer pressure, life journey, karma, and everything else in between are all reasons that someone can choose to give up.  For some, being a victim is easier than what is right or having strength to make take a new path.  For some, opening a new door is too scary.  For some, being alone is within their comfort zone and they don’t want to leave.

You can experience growth, healing, love, reconciliation, and new life when we forge through and open new doors, meet new people, forgive others, seek to be understood, forgive ourselves, make changes, live life!

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can remember that anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But holding it together when many would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.

A Monday Prayer/Meditation/Thought...

“Sometimes when I look in the mirror I’m not too happy with what I see. Please let me see me the way you made me, beautiful and perfect just as I am. Help me to hold this image in my mind and heart as I follow my life’s path. Allow others to witness your light shining through me as I walk with confidence, grace and a smile on my face.”  Victor Fuhrman wrote this, I thought it worthy of sharing.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can remember that I must take time to work on me, celebrate me and love me.

Life

“Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful” said Annette Funicello; a person who lived with a debilitating disease until her death.  Through her darkest hours and final hours it is written that she remained focused, calm and positive.  Her words ring loud, true and for us all.  Despite expectations, directions, or deviations; your life can be wonderful (if you choose it to be!)

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can remember that I am the author of my own life story.

I offer this prayer for us all… “God of Love, Spirit of Life, Guardians of Light, grant us an understanding heart, equal vision, balanced mind, faith, devotion and wisdom.   Grant us strength to resist temptation and passion to share ourselves.  Free us from what ails us.  Keep us safe, secure and healthy.  Let us behold Thee in all these names and forms. Let us serve Thee in all these names and forms. Let us ever remember Thee.  Let us ever sing Thy glories.  Let Thy Name be ever on our lips. Let us abide in Thee for ever and ever.  Amen.”

Be Still And...

Surely it's no coincidence that the word "listen" is an anagram of the word "silent".  Being still, silent and taking time to stop is important.  Not just to hear those who are important in our life, but ourselves too.  That also means no cell phones, no computers, no mp3, no technology.  It means being still, being silent, being open to what is presenting itself to you in that moment.

Some time ago, as I was told, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.” He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty.

He yelled at her, “Don’t you know that when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside it?”  The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, “Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box for you, Daddy.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.
It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

I can be the change that I seek in this world…  I will remember that if you always do what you have always done you will always get what you always got.  That change starts with me.  Now.

Books

We all experience pain at one time or another in our lives.  It may be physical injury, emotional hurt or maybe a combination of both.  Reading can conquer fear, they can take us places we have never visited, explore ideas we have never thought of, lead us to places that are safe, familiar and comfortable.  Sharing a book is a great way to allow someone a vacation, and might help make things better in their world.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can share books with friends, family and those whom need a “vacation”…

Kindness

St. Francis of Assisi wrote “Wherever you go, preach.  Use words of necessary.”  How true that is regardless of our religious, spiritual or nonreligious beliefs!  We need to live, breath, walk and talk the change that we seek for this world.  Being intentional about life and love is something we all can do that requires nothing more than doing it…

Regardless if we are Christians, Islamic, Buddhists, Hindu, a religion not listed, spiritual, or nonreligious we all are connected as we are human beings, we have the ability to be connected by what some call light, energy, spirituality, life, or…

The Golden Rule is to treat others as you want would wish to be treated.  Perhaps a 2011 spin on that would be perhaps we do not treat others in the same way, we ourselves, would not like to be treated.

It costs us nothing to smile, say hello, say thank you, to offer a hand, to open the door, to commit those uncommon, intentional acts of kindness.  You know… those acts of kindness that are the right thing to do, not necessarily fun or easy!

I can be the change that I seek in this world… A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.
