5 Reasons to meditate

1. Increased Concentration and focus
In one study, results showed that performance related to attention and accuracy was heightened in a group of meditators as compared to a control group that did not meditate. In addition, long-term meditators demonstrated greater attention capabilities than short-term meditators. It seems that the more you meditate the better the effects are. The study concluded that meditation appears to result in improvements in aspects of intelligence, school grades, learning ability, and short-and long-term recall.

In addition, one hundred fifty-four Chinese high school students were randomized into a meditation group and a napping group. The meditation group demonstrated significantly increased practical intelligence, field independence, creativity, and speed of information processing, as well as significantly decreased anxiety compared to the control group. Two other studies replicated these findings.

2. Increased Self-Esteem
One study, revealed a significant increase in positive personality growth. As the length of meditation practice grew so did self-esteem. Specifically, meditators with more experience reported themselves to be more confident, relaxed, satisfied, conscientious and less anxious than their less experienced peers.

3. Decreased Levels Of Anxiety, Stress and Depression
A study examined the effects of a meditation program on 78 medical and premedical students. Results showed increased levels of empathy and decreased levels of anxiety and depression in the meditation group as compared to the control group. Furthermore, these results held during the students’ stressful exam period. Luckily for the control group, the findings were replicated when they received the same meditation intervention.

4. Being present for yourself and what is sacred
In the same study as the one noted above in #3, the meditation group scored significantly higher on a measure of spiritual experience. The results were again replicated when the control group received the same treatment.  Ok, here’s just one more, let’s call it a bonus reason to inspire you to get that meditation practice started!

5. Health Benefits
You’ve probably heard that meditative practices are being utilized in a variety of health care settings. According to the study, these practices are used as interventions for: cardiovascular disorders, reduction of psychological distress, and reduction of medical symptoms. The research suggests that meditation may be an effective intervention for: cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, anxiety, and panic disorder, substance abuse, dermatological disorders, reduction of psychological distress and symptoms of distress for cancer patients.

2013 Week 42

Each Sunday I share a photo and word that represents what I am grateful for and brief message.

GRATEFUL WORD:
TRADITION
So many families, couples and individuals have traditions.  One for me in my family was mom making pumpkin bread each year during the holidays.  She would make me 20-30 mini loaves and 10 large loaves for me to share with co-workers and friends.

Every now and then I get the urge to bake, I am a cook, not a baker.  I pulled out the recipe this week and made a test batch of Pumpkin Bread.  The smells, the taste and the process reminded me of mom.  With her wind chime chiming on the back desk I was reminded she was with me as made my first seasons batch.

I realized I had no clove.  I remembered that I have Clove Essential Oil (I ONLY use natural, therapeutic grade, non-synthetic Young Living Oils) and so I used that instead.  What GREAT flavor.  I may never use store bought clove seasoning again!

I am grateful for the traditions my mom instilled in me.  Happy Holidays to us all! J

Holistic Health

Inclusive Life added three holistic health modalities in 2013:
Raindrop Technique
Vita Flex Technique
Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils

RAINDROP TECHNIQUE
Raindrop Technique combines the art of aromatherapy with the technique of Vita Flex in the application of essential oils to various areas of the body. This collection provides a revolutionary means of bringing balance and harmony to the body - physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.  The session will last 75-90 minutes.

VITA FLEX TECHNIQUE
Vita Flex technique is a powerful ancient Tibetan healing methodology brought to the US in the 1920's by Stanley Burroughs. It is a very effective method used alone or with other healing modalities.  It has a synergistic effect when combined with essential oils, and can be used to stimulate all the body systems on a physical and emotional level.  The session will last for 30-45 minutes.

RELEASING EMOTIONAL PATTERNS WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
With biblical essential oils like frankincense and myrrh, our Spiritual Health line enhances moments of devotion and reverence.  Discover a natural path to mental clarity and strength with specific essential oils to support mental health, you can release occasional anxieties and embrace lasting peace.  Awaken your creativity and passion for life! The session will last for 30-45 minutes.  This may be done one-on-one, and in some cases, you may be encouraged to be surrounded by your support family.

In the news

I worked from home today and took a break to catch up and I saw this post "Nevada School Shooting Victims Include 'Hero' Staffer"  My heart sank, yet again.  Not shocked, not surprised, not amused that I am becoming numb to reading these headlines.  It isn't IF I am going to read them this month, it IS when, where, and how many injured or killed.

It is SO very easy to point fingers.  We could blame...
-The NRA
-The Mental Health industry/coverage (local, state, federal government)
-Police
-Elected politicians
-The President
-Gun owners
-Parents who raised the person who committed the crime

Well, I for one do not accept that putting police officers or arming others is the answer to this issue.  I do not accept that tightening SOME laws infringe on someones right to bear arms.  It is time (it was time a long time ago and we ALL allowed our elected officials to put their heads in the sand) that we DEMAND and accept nothing less than closing loop holes in the design of background checks, required training, etc.

I do NOT blame the elected politicians, the President. I blame the voters who keep sending the wrong people to do the right job.  Do you have a mirror?  The person in it needs to be held accountable for the lack of courage of getting this done.  We have ONLY ourselves to blame.

I DO believe we need mental health standards and care in this country... we have none.  Nuts-Crazy?  OUR country is yes.  It is nuts it is crazy that ONLY time most citizens can access emergency mental health care is IF they are an immediate harm to self or others.  Sometimes we know much sooner and they only help is months or weeks away at best.  That is just the tip of the iceberg.
I DO believe that the death toll will continue to rise as those "we" elect CONTINUE to bury their heads in sand.  It is TIME for a change America. It is time that we take OUR country back! It starts with ALL of us being accountable and responsible for who is elected.

This holds true for so many other issues that harm our country and society from being the best, and for us being our highest and best selves.  Accept responsibility and lets make our country a place for ALL to live with peace, love and compassion.

2013 Week 41

Each Sunday I share a photo and word that represents what I am grateful for and brief message.

GRATEFUL WORD:
OUT.  Lots of people "come out" from/to/with a lot of "things"... gender, gender express, sexual orientation, ethnicity, career, political affiliation, religious orientation, and I am sure the list could continue.

For me self-identifying as a Christian who still has questions AND who loves, accepts, recognizes, and respects the paths that others choose (that may be different from my views) was MUCH more difficult than saying to the world I am gay.

Regardless of what you are coming out of, it DOES get better.  It DOES get easier.  You WILL get through it. AND (equally...) it may not be easy right now.  It may get tougher before it gets easier.  You may see people in your life come and go.  Always hold on to these two things...
1) be who you are sand say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those that matter, don't mind.  2) you are beautiful, you are loved, you are worthy-just the way you are.

Holistic Health

Do you read labels?  If not, you should.  You really MUST!  It is VERY important to know what you are putting in your body.  Your body needs not just fuel, but the correct fuel to operate for best performance.

The rule of thumb is that when grocery shopping, 75% of your staple food items should come from the perimeter of the store.  15% should make up non-food items and up to 10% on foods and products that are located in isles.

What is organic?  It may not be has good for you as you think! Organic by US FDA standards (Im not sure what bureaucrat wrote it…) simply means that it was grown without the use of pesticides.  It does not mean that it is natural, or that synthetic chemicals were added.  YOU HAVE TO READ THE LABEL AND KNOW WHAT THE INGREDIANTS ARE!

2013 Week 40

Each Sunday (Tuesday this week!) I share a photo and word that represents what I am grateful for and brief message.

GRATEFUL WORD:
Forty-Six  I celebrated my 46th birthday on Saturday, October 12.  I did so officiating 4 wedding ceremonies in the metro area that day, 2 of which were extra meaningful, and special.  I spent a moment with my Sister Beth and her wife Anita.  It was nice to end the day at home with my husband and our kitty.  This is my first birthday since mom passed; in January it will have been one full year.  They say "life would sure be easier if you knew then, what you know now."  While that is probably true; you would not have had the journey that you did, which is precisely why I celebrate with excitement of being 46 years old!

Holistic Care

It is important for all of us to eat an alkaline diet because our blood pH (potential hydrogen) level is in good range at 7.35 to 7.45, which is slightly alkaline.

Blood pH is simply a measure of how acidic or alkaline the blood is. For context, stomach acid has a pH close to 0 (the most acidic), and bleach is close to 14 (the most alkaline). Pure distilled water sits squarely in the middle at a neutral 7.

It takes work for our bodies to stay balanced within this small window, and the more acidic our diet, the more we work against our body’s efforts. In turn, we leave ourselves feeling tired, and our immune systems vulnerable to dis-ease.

Our bodies work best when we maintain a blood pH level that is just slightly more alkaline than pure distilled water: between 7.35 and 7.45, which helps our bodies to stay within this level by eating a more alkaline diet with fewer acidic foods.

KNOW Y OUR DIET!  The Standard American Diet (SAD) is extremely off-balanced and contains significantly more acidic foods than alkaline foods. This puts constant stress on the body and the immune system to bring the blood pH back into balance.

Eating an alkaline diet helps the blood pH level to stay in balance without as much effort. This does not mean we should eliminate acidic foods from our diet altogether; it simply means we need to shift the balance from the typically acidic diet to a more alkaline diet.  A good rule of thumb is that 60-80% of our diet should be from more alkaline foods, and 20-40% more acidic foods, which would a good amount attention from us all.

REMEMBER: ALL human beings are able to support the body’s intelligence and our own healing powers by using the natural elements: fresh air, pure sunlight, clear water, health foods, rest, and movement.

2013 Week 39

Each Sunday I share a photo and word that represents what I am grateful for and brief message.

GRATEFUL WORD:
Omaha.  I love the Big O!  It is a good, clean and safe city.  Is it perfect?  It is as perfect as life is, it is perfect as each citizen makes it.  When I travel out of town, and I return there is a special feeling of safety and yearning I feel being back in my city.  The most number of 800 calls come into Omaha.  We have the most number of millionaires than any other city per capita. We the the 2nd largest Zoo in the US.  We have more restaurants per capita, than any other city in the US.  And, I think we have the greatest hospitality of any city our size or bigger.

2013 Week 38

Each Sunday I share a photo and word that represents what I am grateful for and brief message.

GRATEFUL WORD:
SISTER.  Beth is my Sister.  Mom always referred to her and her wife as "The Ladies", to this day that cracks me up.  I was in Lincoln this week and needed a place to stay.  My sister didn't think twice about saying yes.  My home away from home was comfortable, safe, and provided the needed respite I needed.  We do not talk every single day, we text almost every day.  We see each other about once every other month (on a good streak.) and we are always connected.  If either of us needs anything we are right there.  Family comes first.  Period.  I can't wait for Thanksgiving.
