A relationship time out…
At work, do we really like being told what to do and how to do it by our bosses or bossy people? No. Home life is no different, yet time after time we still do that to each other.
No one wants to live or work and always being controlled. "If you don't shovel the sidewalk by lunch, then I am going to have to do it.” I wouldn't being saying that unless you always want to be the one shoveling snow! Try saying this instead, "I would appreciate it and it would mean a great deal to me if you could get the walks shoveled this morning.” AND a simple “thank you very much” when they are done goes a long ways. Or better yet, a thank you-love note on the dresser.
Think
about this… How do you feel when your partner
says "I haven't had an apple pie since the baby was born. I don't guess
I'm going to get any more apple pies for eighteen years"? That motivates
you to share some apple pie doesn’t it?
No, not really. What if his
approach was "You know what I'd really like to have? One of your apple
pies. You make the best apple pies in the world. Sometime when you get a
chance, I'd really love one.” Chances
are you will find the time to whip one up.
Requests are more productive than demands, and taste better with ice
cream and pie!
We can be the change we seek in
this world. and in ourselves. One
day. One journey. One person.
One request at a time.
