The
last several months I have read, researched and ranted on the issues
surrounding “!” and religion. “!” being any
group or peoples that are involved in the business of using religion, faith,
church, God, the Bible as weapons of hate that spread indifference, intolerance
and injustice.
Louis
Agassiz wrote “Every scientific truth does through three states: first people
say it conflicts with the Bible; next they say it has been discovered before;
lastly, they say they always believed it.”
My platform or soapbox is that as I look at the facts, too many people
are being oppressed in the United States in the name of religion. As a nation that is supposed to offer freedom
of religion, there are no shortage of politicians who are openly running for
offices spouting hate in the name of their God, and the Bible.
John
Keats wrote “Love is my religion, I could die for that.” Those are powerful words. It is sad to think that every day someone is
injured, hurt or killed probably as a result being taught that behavior is
acceptable. When people hear the same
sermon that teaches and preaches that not everyone is worthy of God’s love and
that many are going to go to hell, it becomes reality that a second class of
citizenry is established.
About
every two hours a teenager in America takes their life. For various reasons and reasons we may never
be able to explain, we know that many of them are gay, lesbian and
transgendered youth or are tired of the fight to stay alive. Almost 9,000 hate crimes are reported each
year, some involve murder. Again, for
various reason and some we know are gay, lesbian and transgender murders.
One
person being hurt, one person being injured and one person being murdered is
unacceptable in this land of freedom! The
“right” for religions to teach and preach intolerance, indifference and
injustice should end when human rights, civil rights and inalienable rights are
no longer available to each and every human being, equally.
We can be the change we seek in
this world. and in ourselves. One
day. One journey. One person.
One right at a time.
