Grace is a name for any of a
number of short prayers said or an unvoiced intention held prior to or after
eating, thanking God and/or the entities that have given of themselves to
furnish nutrients to those partaking in the meal. Some traditions hold that
grace and thanksgiving imparts a blessing which sanctifies the meal. In the
English language tradition, reciting a prayer prior to eating is traditionally
referred to as "saying grace".
It
is my belief that Grace is just a form of saying thank you, being mindful of
what you have to be grateful for, let’s face it: many people die each year from
not having anything to eat. If you are
reading this email you are among the top 10% wealthiest people on earth.
You
don’t have to be Christian or belong to any religion, church or faith group to
share grace or thanks prior to eating.
Something I have adapted into my life is within the first four bites of
my meal I affirm that 1) I will bring love, 2) I will take the joy of others to
be my own, 3) I will ease the suffering of others and 4) I will continue to
seek enlightenment.
You
can substitute truths, rites, and passages that pertain to your life as you
wish. I think it is important to be
mindful at all times, it seems that in our Western culture most seem to feel
most comfortable doing it before a meal or before bedtime. (I often pray during songs, driving, and just
about any time really.)
We can be the change we seek in
this world. and in ourselves. One day. One journey.
One person. One moment of thanks
at a time.
