Religion

NOTE:
http://www.inclusivelife.org/category/blog will be the home of the Inclusive Life Blog beginning April 1, 2012.

I hear and read a lot about religion in the news.  I hear the political candidates talk about it.  I hear people who are opposed to diverse issues talking about it.  What scares me and frustrates me is that so many people that are speaking on behalf of their religion are doing so from a point of view of fire and brimstone and not a point of love.  They are judging others and not lifting them up.  They are spreading hate, injustice, intolerance, indifference and at times untruths, all in the name of their religion.  And of course, “that” religion IS the only one that is accurate, good, and right.

There are many world religions.  Most all of which do have a principal of love (it IS a great thing you know…)  As I observe people I hear them, see them and witness them to quote scripture (often out of context), share inaccurate information (often because of ignorance), and it seems the more vocal they are the more others seem to back down (often out of fear.)  Is that what real religion is about, fear?

I have taken calls, visited with people in person and received letters from those who have been shunned, hurt and mistreated in the name of religion.  Many stories can bring me to tears.
I am sad that some fanatics, extremists, and fundamentalists are helping spread fear and push people from the very institution that they belong to.  Instead of helping, they are hurting, alienating, and judging.  I don’t know of a place in any scriptures where people are called to do that.

Since 2009 I have met with many individuals and couples and think only 10 out of 100 actually attend worship.  They said it is easier emotionally to remain at home in their own community where they will be treated well and loved.
I could write here that none of us lives in a glass house.  And that when we point a finger at someone there is always three fingers pointing back at us.  What I will say is this.  None of us where created to judge, hate or harm others.  Weather it is your belief that karma will prevail or a day of judgment by a higher power, I believe that people will reap what they sow.

We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One moment of love at a time.
