Awareness

In the movie Finding Nemo, there are two fish swimming along and they meet another fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” The two fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and says, “What the hell is water?”

A bit like life isn’t it?  Many times we are just like those fish; swimming in a sea of possibility, not exactly knowing where we are at or what we are doing at all times.  I think sometimes it is too close for us to realize!  It has been said that “Awareness is to personal growth as the Hubble Telescope is to space exploration!”  We can zoom in and see the spaciousness of our inner life, we go deeper in order to see clearer what is right in front of us. Awareness is seeing life from a depth of 30,000 feet, where vision and purpose are born.

What does awareness mean to you, in life?  Ponder that if you have not.  I believe without awareness, we swim and drift through life. I believe that when we are aware we intentionally learn to see the beauty and potential opportunities that life has for us.  Like the fish, we need to both recognize who and where are now, and explore our life opportunities.

I love the Zen saying, “You are perfect as you are, and you could use a little work.”  And I am partial to the one I have coined for Inclusive Life: “You are Beautiful.  You are loved.  You are worthy.  Just the way you are.”  To live an authentic life is to fully accept yourself AND seek to be more of who you are at the same time… to be AWARE of you!  There is always more you to discover and become!  You can be the change you seek in this world!

Why awareness?  It is powerful. Awareness helps you to see both the strengths and weaknesses in yourself.  It helps you understand and view others.  It helps you understand your values, your beliefs and relationships.  Awareness can remind you of what makes you happy, what makes you sad, and what makes you tick.  Awareness enables you to see both the beauty and the things that need to be changed; injustices in your life and the world.  And awareness will help you to know what to do next, awareness is knowing why it’s important, skill is knowing how to do it, and integrity is following through and actually doing it.  Why is a powerful question. Why creates a frame for all your whats, whens, wheres, whos and hows. Think about the power of why.

We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One lifetime of awareness at a time.
