The Easy Button

Confucius taught “It is easy to hate and it is difficult to love. This is how the whole scheme of things works. All good things are difficult to achieve; and bad things are very easy to get.”  I think that I can agree with the general principle of that thought.

It reminds me of the Staples “Easy Button”, just push it and it happens.  As US Citizens we have become a people of immediate gratification, immediate want, immediate satisfaction AND absolutely no room for error, compassion or respect sometimes.

I have given much thought to writing a book with regard to my years in the hospitality industry and then when I traveled a lot.  I will name it “Service, from both sides of the counter.”  There are many great stories to tell of great moments of frustration, indifference, and lack of respect and there are many moments of wow, courage, and compassion.

Life’s journey for each of us is not much different I think.  We have “valley” and learn, grow and LIVE as much as if you were on the highest peak of life.  Crossing those deserts and getting across rivers are obstacles that can not only teach us a lot they can also prepare our mind, body and spirits for things to come.

As we journey through life, work, relationship, family, worship, friends and everything in between we should be mindful of where we are at, what we can be learning, how it applies to each of our own journey and focus on that.

It IS easier to do what is easy, which may not always be the “right thing”, as the “right thing” is often times a road that is rough, tough and long.  I submit that at the end of the journey the right thing is often a more powerful, authentic and greater experience than just pushing that button.

We can be the change we seek in this world. and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One push of the button at a time.
