In
late January I learned that a friend had died.
He was a young person, and he died of a drug overdose. His addiction won. He must have felt that the only way to escape
whatever life, living hell or issues he had was to turn back to life that
included using.
The
great George Carlin said "Just cause you got the monkey off your back
doesn't mean the circus has left town." You may have been able to stop
using (great!), and you have to consider that those whom you have been using
with probably have not so your “playground” or “community” needs to change,
because the circus is still there!
Food,
drugs, shopping, gambling, lying, steeling, there are so many different
addictions, and they affect each of us differently, yet almost characteristically
the same. Life can be going along well
and all of a sudden we hit a roadblock, hurdle, sharp turn or pothole. Sometimes it is easier to revert back to that
comfort zone, security blanket, that known feeling of “!” that each person experiences
instead of hitting whatever is in front of you head on and right through
it.
For
outsiders looking in, it is easier said than done. For insiders looking out, “those people” don’t
get it. And often times, both people are
like to ships passing in the night.
I
will miss my friend. I already miss
looking forward to seeing what he could accomplish. I am sorry that he, me and the world will not
know what he was could have accomplished in his life.
I
challenge each human being to reach out.
If you are a person with an addiction, reach out for help, your life is
what you make it. You CAN make it
better. There are people waiting to help
regardless if you believe that or not.
If you are a person that knows someone with an addiction, reach out to
help. Be firm in your message, know
where they can get the help they need, and be willing to be that ear, that ride
or that phone call. It will come!
To
the world you may only be one person. To
one person, you may be the world. You
may be their line of life.
We can be the change we seek in
this world. and in ourselves. One day. One journey.
One person. Reaching out one
person at a time.
