Justice

I would like to explore some principles that a specific church adheres to.  These may be familiar to some of you and they may not to others.  They are great principles for ANYONE to follow.
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.”

It was Robert Kennedy that once said “Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the life of others, or strikes out against injustice, it sends a tiny ripple of hope and those ripples, crossing each other from a million different center of energy build up a current, which can sweep down the mightiest wall of oppression and resistance.”

We live in a day in age like no other before.  Technology grows and changes by the minute instead of by the year.  Social media is driving many aspects of most everyone’s life, controlling if we allow it to do so.  How does that affect our interaction with each other?  How does it affect our ability to engage with each other about social issues, human issues, issues of justice, compassion, equality and more…?
The technology sure seems to remove so much of the human component.  Some are able to carry on a text message for hours, but not be able to strike up a face to face with someone sitting on the bus or someone who is standing next to them with the same passion, energy or confidence.

When we start taking the “human” out of what we do I believe we being to lose touch with important aspects of humanity.  Insuring that each of us, our families, our friends and we ourselves receive justice is important.  How do we do that if we are not engaged with one another?  How do we insure it is equitable?  I don’t know that compassion is something that we can feel, know, sense or trust via electronic forms of communication.  A hug, a raised eyebrow and a touch means so much and says so much with no verbal communication needed (or text!)

Human relationships are changing every day, by the moment at times.  What is important to you in the epicenter of your life is probably very different from that of someone 3,000 miles away, yet most of our basic needs are very much the same.  In ways, our life journeys are similar.  And yet we probably could not carry on a conversation because of a language barrier.  (we could always use a computer to translate…)

I hope, especially as the year ends we all take a moment to reflect on what our epicenters include, and if they include justice, equity and compassion in how we act, react and promote one another.

We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One thought at a time.
