Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It is coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.
This day has meaning for many individuals, couples and families as they have someone who served, is serving or gave their life in the name of defending freedom in the name of the United States. My brother did two tours of Vietnam with the US Marine Corps. Injured once badly enough that they had told our family he had been killed in action (I was named as namesake in his honor) he was only to return home, get well, go back for second tour and return home safely. AMEN!
I am glad that “today” this country seems to celebrate and honor all of our men and women who serve despite any ill feelings that it may have of why/where they are serving (after all they are being deployed at the will of our government. That was not the case with most Vietnam Vets.
This year marks the end of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Controversial for all except for whom that bill was designed to keep quite. All men and women can now serve openly, proudly and inclusively of who they truly are without having to pretend or lie.
Today I give thanks to the many men and women who have served, who are serving, who will serve and for those who gave their lives promoting freedom. Thank you for your sacrifices, honor, courage and commitment.
Happy Veterans Day to you!
We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves. One day. One journey. One person. One solider at a time.
