Jeanie Tomasko wrote “Two crows work the parking lot. Find a McDonald’s bag. Lunch! Salvation! In the far corner. The last fry.” I think our lives can be like that sometimes; a simple meal is the most important thing on our agenda. For some it may be the only thing on their agenda. It doesn’t even have to be good food, just that it is something. We take what we can get sometimes don’t we?
How we each view our own “McDonald’s Bag” is vastly diverse and unique, just as we are. Admitting where we are at in life is often a first step for some. Sometimes other steps are MUCH easier to take than admitting to ourselves, let a lone someone else, that our lives do not meet the “perfection life standards of others.” Seldom do we try to achieve something that makes us happy or is good for us. It is often in pursuit of doing it for someone else or someone else’s acknowledgement or blessing.
Perhaps this “lunch” and “salvation” that Jeanie wrote about for the crows, was simply that, them having a happy moment, a happy meal, a happy life. Being ok with what they had, making due with what they found and not worrying that the crows in the next lot were dining on prime rib.
How we view what we have, and being thankful for the life we have is too often a challenging task for many human beings. It seems like there is always a race for more, more now, more right now! As the song is sung… “Be still and know…” often we can do ourselves a favor and just shut up, shut down, turn off and just be still. No not for days or weeks, but certainly long enough to relax and allow ourselves to be.
We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves. One day. One journey. One person. One fry at a time.
