A Monday Prayer/Meditation/Thought...

“Sometimes when I look in the mirror I’m not too happy with what I see. Please let me see me the way you made me, beautiful and perfect just as I am. Help me to hold this image in my mind and heart as I follow my life’s path. Allow others to witness your light shining through me as I walk with confidence, grace and a smile on my face.”  Victor Fuhrman wrote this, I thought it worthy of sharing.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can remember that I must take time to work on me, celebrate me and love me.

Life

“Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful” said Annette Funicello; a person who lived with a debilitating disease until her death.  Through her darkest hours and final hours it is written that she remained focused, calm and positive.  Her words ring loud, true and for us all.  Despite expectations, directions, or deviations; your life can be wonderful (if you choose it to be!)

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can remember that I am the author of my own life story.

I offer this prayer for us all… “God of Love, Spirit of Life, Guardians of Light, grant us an understanding heart, equal vision, balanced mind, faith, devotion and wisdom.   Grant us strength to resist temptation and passion to share ourselves.  Free us from what ails us.  Keep us safe, secure and healthy.  Let us behold Thee in all these names and forms. Let us serve Thee in all these names and forms. Let us ever remember Thee.  Let us ever sing Thy glories.  Let Thy Name be ever on our lips. Let us abide in Thee for ever and ever.  Amen.”

Be Still And...

Surely it's no coincidence that the word "listen" is an anagram of the word "silent".  Being still, silent and taking time to stop is important.  Not just to hear those who are important in our life, but ourselves too.  That also means no cell phones, no computers, no mp3, no technology.  It means being still, being silent, being open to what is presenting itself to you in that moment.

Some time ago, as I was told, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree.

Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.” He was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty.

He yelled at her, “Don’t you know that when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside it?”  The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, “Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box for you, Daddy.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.
It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.

I can be the change that I seek in this world…  I will remember that if you always do what you have always done you will always get what you always got.  That change starts with me.  Now.

Books

We all experience pain at one time or another in our lives.  It may be physical injury, emotional hurt or maybe a combination of both.  Reading can conquer fear, they can take us places we have never visited, explore ideas we have never thought of, lead us to places that are safe, familiar and comfortable.  Sharing a book is a great way to allow someone a vacation, and might help make things better in their world.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can share books with friends, family and those whom need a “vacation”…

Right vs. Easy

I consider my health (mind, body & spirit), relationship & general life success; they are the sum of the choices I have made.  I have had to adjust because of changes that I may or may not control.  Sometimes I have had to choose the harder path or what I didn’t want to do, like: Walking when I don’t feel like it, forgiving someone, feeling the fear and doing it anyway. Do what is right, not what is easy!

I am on path to lower my weight, improve my health and reduce the number of medications I take.  Recently I weighed 360 pounds.  I am down to 336 right now and continue to make changes.  Not diets but changes in eating habits which includes exercise.  There are days that I just don’t want to eat better, that comfort food calls my name, screams my name!  There are days that my legs and feet say NO NO NO!

If I am disappointed in any area of my life, whatever choices I have been making aren’t working and I need to adjust, I need to do the right thing, not the easy thing.  Easy things could be: Going along with the gossip, surrendering to peer pressure, saying yes to needless obligations, submitting to the crying demands of children, starting your new program on “Monday” (instead of right now), reacting in anger, holding a grudge, giving the ‘silent treatment’.  Doing the right thing may include: going to the gym or exercising when you don’t feel like it, forgiving someone, feeling the fear and doing it anyway, admitting you were wrong and apologizing, ordering the salad when you want the burger and fries, saying no to (yet another) shot of… or beer, or bowl of ice cream!

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I can care enough about myself, invest in myself, love myself enough to do the right thing, now.

Home

“I hear her voice, in the mornin’ hours she calls to me. The radio reminds me of my home far a-way. And drivin’ down the road I get a feeling’. That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday. Country roads, take me home.”  Where is home for you?  Where is that place that is comfortable, safe, all knowing?  What is your definition of home?

As I get older, my mom gets smarter.  She is 93 and I care for her.  She lives with us.  I love that.  I remember growing up in Bellevue, Nebraska and there always seemed to be these kids coming in and out of our home; all hours, all days, all the time.  In the early 70’s mom was “the” emergency shelter for law enforcement for the county.  If a child had been abused or needed “loving custody” instead of protective custody, they were brought to our home until the courts made their decisions.

I also remember that it was just mom and I growing up.  I also remember neighbors who needed food, clothing and love.  Our pantry always had extra food for those who needed some, mom always had things to share and always had MORE than enough love to give out.

Home is where you make it, it is where you share unconditional love to others, without exception.

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I am mindful that home may be that place that I grow up wanting to leave and as I get older a place I want to return to.

Words to Ponder

I share with you three words to ponder today…

LISTENING: You never know what you might learn by being still.  Cultivate the art of listening in which you lean toward the world. All things in the universe want to be heard, as do the voices inside us.

LAUGHTER: When you are happy, scared, indifferent, lonely, upset you will find that allowing yourself to laugh will certainly improve your ability to heal, feel better and it IS contagious!

LOVE: Fall in love over and over again every day. Love your family, your friends, you co-workers, neighbors, your enemies, and yourself. And don't stop with humans. Share that love with animals, plants, and other living things.

All three of these words we long for ourselves.  Take time to share these actions with others, who might be a bit more hungry for them than you.  They don’t cost to money to make happen and they change the world one person at a time.

Please join me in this prayer as you feel comfortable… “God of love, Brother of life, Spirit of light we give thanks for the many blessing that we have in our life.  Remind us, help us, share with us the ability to take time to use our gifts of listening, of laughter and of love to heal ourselves and others as we attempt to make life better here on earth.  In your many precious names we pray, Amen.”

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I am beautiful, I am loved and I am worthy.  I make a difference!

Expectations

The expectations that we place on each other can often lead to disappointment and stress, especially when things don’t turn out as “we” expected!  Set those expectations on water and let them float away, now live your life without them.  Life without expectations means you accept people as they are; yourself as you are.

Picture all the expectations you have for yourself, your life, your spouse, your kids, your coworkers, your job, the world. Take them from inside you, and toss them in the water.  What happens then?  They float away, carried by waves.  The further they are taken from you the more cleansed your life becomes!

We build these expectations in our heads of what other people should do, what our lives should be like, how other drivers should behave … and yet it’s all fantasy. It’s not real.  And when reality doesn’t meet our fantasy, we wish the world were different.

What’s a life without expectations like? It means you accept reality as it is, and people as they are, without expectations, without trying to force people into the containers you have for them, seeing things as they are. It’s a life where you don’t need to be disappointed or frustrated or angry — or if you are, you accept it, and then let it go.

If you do something good, you won’t expect praise or appreciation. Let those expectations of reward and praise float away with the waves. Do good because you love doing good, and expect nothing beyond that.
Notice if you start to wish things weren’t the way they are. If you wish someone else didn’t do something, notice that. You have expectations, and you wish people or the world could have met them instead of doing what they actually did. Toss those wishes in the ocean too. Now accept things, and move on.

I can be the change I seek in this world… I will remember that the best things in life are unexpected because there were no expectations!

Friday's Question

Friday is normally a day that I try and keep free and clear of any plans as it is our family day.  So I sleep in late, have no agenda (normally) and everything we do is pretty much on the fly.  I like that a lot.  Now, not every Friday is like this but it is our goal to spend quality time together.

How do you make time for your family, loved ones, friends and others you care about?

Hospitality

Good morning world!  Hospitality is on my mind today. We practice it when we graciously welcome guests (including strangers and enemies) into our world.  Sometimes hospitality requires that we cross boundaries and tear down barriers erected in our society to keep "those people" away. Sometimes it means entertaining those who may be different than us.

Hospitality and hostility are both derived from the same word root — but they couldn't be more different. Whereas hospitality is about welcoming all, hostility thrives on insider/outsider conflicts. Practice the former to increase your tolerance of the various groups in our society and their distinctive lifestyles.

On an interpersonal level, hospitality is a good prescription to balance a tendency to be critical of and unaccommodating to others. People who are distrustful of the world, who become fearful and paranoid when strangers approach, or who are suspicious of ideas unlike their own will also benefit from this practice.
How do you practice hospitality (work, home, worship?)

I can be the change I seek in this world…  I will remember that to the world I may only be one person.  And to one person, I may be the world!

Seeing

“Vision is the art of seeing things invisible” writes  Jonathan Swift.  Perhaps it is the strength we have within ourselves, the value in someone we know, the ability of someone who we may be at odds with.  There are times in our life that our greatest power is to see beyond what is in front of us.

As the story goes, there were two men, both seriously ill, in the same room of a hospital. Quite a small room, it had one window looking out on the world. One of the men, as a part of his treatment, was allowed to sit up in bed for an hour in the afternoon (something to do with draining the fluid from his lungs). His bed was next to the window. But the other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

Every afternoon when the man next to the window was propped up for his hour, he would pass the time by describing what he could see outside. The window apparently overlooked a park where there was a lake. There were ducks and swans in the lake, and children came to throw them bread and sail model boats. Young lovers walked hand in hand beneath the trees, and there were flowers and stretches of grass, games of softball, and at the back, behind the fringe of trees, was a fine view of the city skyline.

The man on his back would listen to the other man describe all this, enjoying every minute.   He heard how a child nearly fell into the lake, and how beautiful the girls were in their summer dresses. His friend’s descriptions eventually made him feel he could almost see what was happening outside.

Then one fine morning the nurses came in to check vitals, deliver pills and start the day.  It was realized that the many closest to the window had passed away in his sleep.  Without his friend, the man on his back soon lost his connection to the outside world.  After a few days he asked if he could be switched to the other bed, he wanted to be next to the window.  So they moved him, tucked him in, and made him quite comfortable. The minute they left, he propped himself up on one elbow, painfully and laboriously, and looked out the window only to realize that it faced a blank wall.

I can be the change I seek in this world… .  I will remember that an open mind leaves a chance for others to share a worthwhile thought.

Tuesday

“Soften the ground of our being, and hallow in us a space for the planting of thy presence.” I came across many versions of the Lord’s Prayer and this was a passage that resonated with me, and I wanted to share.  Whatever truth you hold, it IS important that you “live it”.  Have a great Tuesday.

I can be the change that I seek in this world… I will live my life according to the truth I know.  I will grow, live, learn, love and contribute to make my life good.

July 4th 2011

In the midst of the race for politics, power, money, education, religion, there surly is room for the human race…

As I US Citizen I will celebrate Independence Day, perhaps in a different mindset that many or most. Today I think about who have given their life and their freedom to defend what the United States holds to be important, knowing that sometimes I agree and sometimes I do not. Supporting the brave people of the armed forces is the utmost importance to me. My brother served two tours of Vietnam in the Marine Corp and was not extended the same atmosphere that today’s troops are given. I hope that never happens again.

I also think about freedom. Some freedoms, rights and privileges are afforded to SOME Americans not all. I have faith and hope that one day we all shall be free, equal and Independent.

I can be the change that I seek in this world… I will remember that independence is a chance to make life for all, better.

Have a happy day of independence wherever you may be...

Being Surrounded

Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote “I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.”  Being around friends, family co-workers, and others in social situations allows us time to be “on stage” for others to see who we are and how we respond in life.  I am blessed to have a wonderful partner and be surrounded by supportive family and friends.

Would you join me in prayer as it honors  your belief… “Parent of Love, Light and Life, thank you, thank you, thank you for the many blessings, gifts, and beacons of light that we are given in life.  Allow us the passion to accept those gifts, share those gifts and use those gifts to make life on earth better for all.  In your many precious names we pray, Amen.”

Forgiveness

“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."  Is it easier, for you, to ask for forgiveness or to offer it others?  Both can be healing, rewarding, and experiences that allow you to grow in ways you never thought possible.  Is there someone whom you need get in right relation with?  This would be a great way to start…it is never too late.

After many of my life’s experiences, challenges, and  hurdles I realized when reflecting that I owed some people apologizes for the way that I had treated them, acted towards them.  I had done and said some things that were not authentic to who I know I really am.

I met with them.  Apologized and ask for their forgiveness.  I was nervous.  There was a pit in my stomach.  And when done, I was recharged, refreshed, renewed with love, life and light.  I knew that what I did was not easy, nor was it for them either.  Taking a walk down bad-memory lane could not have been on their top ten list that day, and they did it!

I can be the change I seek in this world…I will remember that forgiveness is a good thing, it warms the heart and cools the sting.

Friday (yes, it IS finally here!)

You are beautiful.  You are loved.  You are worthy.  Just the way you are.  Why is that so hard to believe when others simply don’t meet your expectations?  Perhaps the key is in our own expectations of that relationship.  I will not forget that I may pass Robins while looking for Meadowlarks.  And I may pass opportunity while searching for what I want, instead of what is to be received.

I once worked on a large community project with a friend of mine.  During the first several months of planning it was clear that the project would be a great success because of this person’s knowledge, passion and skills.  There were a few obstacles, from many directions and we always got back on track.  Then one day something changed.  That passion they once displayed was gone.  Little by little they started backing of the project.  Then it was apparent that some of their knowledge and skills were not as strong as they perceive.

Text messages, emails, phone calls were not returned, many people felt abandoned, frustrated and disappointed.  This person eventually communicated some.  They shared that they felt abandoned, frustrated and disappointed.  Perception is everything sometimes isn’t it?

Several friendships were lost.  Much respect faded.  Trust called to question.  Perhaps the expectations that we have for ourselves and others are set so high that they are unachievable under most any circumstance?  It has been said that when we reduce our expectations to nothing, each of us can really appreciate what  you have.
I can be the change I seek in this world… I will live life knowing that disappointment and expectations are a lot like bankruptcy;  bankruptcy of friendship, spirit, progress and life.

Thursday Challenge

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow.  We live in a society that promotes a faced paced, get a head, must win, must be better world.  It is easy for anyone to get lost just trying to live, let alone to make a difference.

As the story goes a mule fell into the farmer’s well. The farmer heard the mule praying or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer sympathized with the mule, but decided that neither the mule nor the well was worth the trouble of saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together, told them what had happened, and enlisted them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.

Initially the old mule was hysterical! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!

This he did, blow after blow. “Shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up…shake it off and step up!” He repeated to encourage himself. No matter how painful the blows, or how distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought panic and just kept right on SHAKING IT OFF AND STEPPING UP!

It wasn’t long before the old mule, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him actually helped him . . . all because of his courage and ability to keep trying!

THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give in to panic, bitterness, or self-pity.

I can be the change I seek in this world… I will remember that  some progress and lessons are measured in a lifetime, not hours or days.

Wednesday Wisdom

Perhaps part of our life journey in finding love is to also understand the walls that we build to “protect” ourselves from it.  Finding that special someone, allowing others to get close, maybe saying I will never allow myself to fall in love again.  Do you understand how you love?  Do you understand your expectations?  If you don’t, how can anyone else be expected to?  Pause, grow and learn about you!

Performing couples coaching I hear often that people feel that they were betrayed by this person or that person or wronged while in a relationship and therefore built this wall or made choices that kept them from growing in relationship with other person.

I have heard that some people simply do not believe in the concept of love and the need for intimacy with another person.

All of which are choices that each person has the free agency to make. There is no law, rules or supreme ordinance that requires any of us to love anyone at any time.  I submit that when we make the choice not to love others are we not preventing ourselves from being loved as well.  Are we not preventing ourselves from growing, learning, and exploring who we are, how we live and what we are as a human being?
I can be the change I seek in this world… I can connect with others.  I will pour my full presence into learning about me before I expect someone else to!

Tuesday Morning

Robert Valett wrote “The human heart feels things the eyes cannot see, and knows what the mind cannot understand.” Briefly re-experiencing a cherished memory creates synchronization in your heart rhythm in mere seconds, which increases release of healthy hormones while at the same time decreasing damaging stress hormones.  Your immune system is strengthened, blood pressure decreases and health and focus increase.
Using a simple prescription that consists of a number of exercises that anyone can do anywhere in a few minutes—the details are coming shortly—HeartMath is successfully battling the greatest threat to health, happiness and peace in this world: stress.

A quite startlingly simple answer was found to that question in the redwood forests of Boulder Creek, California, south of San Francisco. Since 1991, the Institute of HeartMath has generated a large body of convincing scientific evidence that it is indeed possible to create love. HeartMath’s research shows that emotions work much faster, and are more powerful, than thoughts. And that—when it comes to the human body—the heart is much more important than the brain to overall health and well-being—even cognitive function—than anyone but poets believed. Its dominance inside the body is now clearly demonstrated. Thinking clearly with your brain is useful. But feeling positively from your heart provides an amazing boost to health and creativity.

I can be the change I seek in this world… I can focus on my love for my own mind, body and spirit!
