Intolerance

I was thumbing through some training materials and came across some words written by Todd. D. Hunter, an Author and contributor to an online forum for pastors.

He wrote about those who are “spiritual” but not religious.  “I am not angry with these movements.  I am actually glad to see that the spiritual side of humanity still gets some airtime in our culture.”  He goes on to write “These movements, for all their errors when viewed against orthodox Christianity, have kept alive the notion that purely secular worldview does not make sense of reality and is not fulfilling.”  He adds “Why might these be the case?  I don’t think it it’s because the people creating designer religions are insincere.  I don’t believe it is because they don’t work at their chosen approach to spirituality.  I believe transformation is not happening for crucial reason: these movements have, for the most part, cut themselves off from the text, the story, the only revelation that has the power to pull into alignment all the various aspects of our lives.” (the Bible.)

I finished thumbing through the rest of the material and found similar words written.  I was surprised to find some about why you may be only married once.  Why pornography is bad for men.  And those promoting “Old Testament” Ethics.

I have proclaimed my faith of choice to be based on Christianity.  Perhaps not of the same views or interoperations as the mainline church down the street, but nonetheless based on what I have learned, have been taught and what I have to come to know as the truth.  What makes me sad is that people, from any religion, would have the mindset that “their” truth is the only truth, the correct version of what others must follow, and are intolerant of those who don’t join or believe exactly as they do.

May what is sacred, good and peaceful in me, bow and respect to what is sacred, good and peaceful in you.  I will share if you ask.  I will tell if you want to know.  I will learn if you let me.   I will not push.  I will not pull.  I will be.  I hope you will let me be.

We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One truth at a time.”
