Memorial Day Monday

First observed in 1868, flowers were placed at the graves of soldiers as a memorial.  Today, we honor all who have died in service of our nation on Memorial Day and often times our loved one’s whom we miss. 

Today I give thanks to have a brother alive who served two tours of Nam with the Marine Corps, a day does not go by that I am not reminded of the sacrifice he and countless others gave, some giving the ultimate sacrifice.  And I reflect upon the life and times of my departed sister whom I miss a great deal. 

I hope today instead of just attending a party or putting flowers or flags out that you take a moment to reflect upon your family, your friends and the many others who have sacrificed so much for us to enjoy many of the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted.

The "National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed in December 2000 asking all Americans at 3 p.m. local time "to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to 'Taps'.

Ways you could choose to observe this day:

IN OMAHA: Visit the Mini-Memorial at Memorial Park (open 24 hours)

Thank a veteran or service person (they are unsung heroes!)

Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

Visit local memorials.

Fly the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon.

Fly the POW/MIA Flag

Pledge to aid to widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen soldiers, and disabled veterans.

I offer the following prayer… “God of love, God of Peace, God of Light we lift up and give thanks for the many brave men and women who have stood for peace, liberty and freedom.  We ask for a hedge of protection around those serving now, their families and loved ones.  Protect them, keep them safe, secure and healthy, keep them safe from hurt, harm and danger.  In your many precious names we pray, amen, Amen, AMEN!”

Saturday's Songs that Say Something

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”  Words that ring as true today as when Martin Luther King, Jr. said them many years ago. 

Freedom has many meanings to those who speak the word in different; countries, states & cities. It seems we are worlds apart in being free at times.  Garth’s song “We Shall Be Free” sums up freedom in broad strokes of love, light and vision for a time where we all are free from what limits us as human beings.

Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.”  Perhaps easier to say for some of us than others.  I had a bully in my life.  It was painful.  Not only when, how and what the bully did, but the intimidation I felt.  Remember, life goes on.  It begins with your next word, step, and breath.

I believe that there are 3 types of preparation-Mind, Body and Spirit and you can't get by with just 1 you need all 3!  Keeping them in the best possible condition (or centered) is important.  Your mind needs to be shape to allow you to think, grow and learn.  Your body must be healthy, well nourished and worked.  Your spirit is the life force that weaves your body and mind together!

Wednesday Wisdom

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”  From candlelight in storms, food, pets, organs, real estate and more; individuals, couples and families are sharing.  They've realized that sharing brings everyone closer and together; moving from "me" to "we."

In a society valuing independence and fearing disagreement, people are finding ways to stretch their budgets and spending abilities and growing relationships by sharing what they have. Through sharing arrangements, individuals, couples and families have lightened their footprint, freed up cash, saved time, and found both confidence in cooperation and growth in meeting others.

Tuesday

Lewis Smedes wrote “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.”  When someone gifts negative energy or words, give them a gift of positive energy or words without hesitation!  YOU (and YOU alone) make the decision that allows HOW someone else’s energy or words affect you!

A friend shared his thoughts about forgiveness.  He said that it is a hard thing to forgive people. He and his best friend had an argument and decided not talk over the summer. For him it was really hard to not talk to her. She hurt him and he hurt her. The way they hurt each other was by pressing each others buttons (sound familiar?)  He said he was not sure how to fix the problem.  He said he apologized, talked and rationalized with her. Nothing seems to work.

He said that he felt like he had the capacity to forgive. He realized that forgiveness teaches a couple of lessons; being wronged by another is a way of reminding us how easily we can be hurt, and perhaps we will be less likely to hurt or wrong someone else because we, ourselves, have been hurt or wronged.

He also realized that people are not perfect and that everyone falls short of someone's else’s standards AND it is very painful when we fall short of our own.  Forgiveness seems to be the answer to the vicious cycle of wrongs committed against each other.

There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.

The people of Joplin, Missouri were devastated last night as a tornado damaged their city and left behind destruction and many without life.  I ask you to join me in prayer and thought that peace, healing and love be with those affected and those serving others.

Sunday Morning

“Miracles are not contrary to nature, but only contrary to what we know about nature.”

At 19 Brryan Jackson is a living miracle. At birth his father (a blood transfusionist) intentionally injected him with AIDS-infected blood, intending to kill him & not pay child support. Brryan defied the odds-tests show no trace of the virus for 2 years.  He said “God has blessed me to have such a strong voice, to have a story.”

Be the change you seek in this world…

Obstacles aren’t necessarily bad.  I can use them as guideposts along my journey showing me where I need to go next and what I need to learn…
