Intolerance

I was thumbing through some training materials and came across some words written by Todd. D. Hunter, an Author and contributor to an online forum for pastors.

He wrote about those who are “spiritual” but not religious.  “I am not angry with these movements.  I am actually glad to see that the spiritual side of humanity still gets some airtime in our culture.”  He goes on to write “These movements, for all their errors when viewed against orthodox Christianity, have kept alive the notion that purely secular worldview does not make sense of reality and is not fulfilling.”  He adds “Why might these be the case?  I don’t think it it’s because the people creating designer religions are insincere.  I don’t believe it is because they don’t work at their chosen approach to spirituality.  I believe transformation is not happening for crucial reason: these movements have, for the most part, cut themselves off from the text, the story, the only revelation that has the power to pull into alignment all the various aspects of our lives.” (the Bible.)

I finished thumbing through the rest of the material and found similar words written.  I was surprised to find some about why you may be only married once.  Why pornography is bad for men.  And those promoting “Old Testament” Ethics.

I have proclaimed my faith of choice to be based on Christianity.  Perhaps not of the same views or interoperations as the mainline church down the street, but nonetheless based on what I have learned, have been taught and what I have to come to know as the truth.  What makes me sad is that people, from any religion, would have the mindset that “their” truth is the only truth, the correct version of what others must follow, and are intolerant of those who don’t join or believe exactly as they do.

May what is sacred, good and peaceful in me, bow and respect to what is sacred, good and peaceful in you.  I will share if you ask.  I will tell if you want to know.  I will learn if you let me.   I will not push.  I will not pull.  I will be.  I hope you will let me be.

We can be the change we seek in this world, and in ourselves.  One day.  One journey.  One person.  One truth at a time.”

October 11th, 2011

On Oct. 11, 1987, half a million people participated in the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. It was the second such demonstration in our nation’s capital and resulted in the founding of a number of LGBT organizations.

It was around this date that in 2009 I went to Washington, DC for another March on Washington for Equality. On the way there I had read the book "Endangered Values" by former President Jimmy Carter, which helped me begin to think about so many things.  I loved the book, and read it at the right time.  Then I visited the National Holocaust Museum.  I was about 1/2 way through not allowing any to sink in.  I wasn't there.  This didn't affect me.  Then it affected me.  I saw the shoes.  It was an emotional turning point for many things.  Then we had the March.  The first speaker I knew, the Rev. Troy Perry (Founder of MCC Churches) and he didn't just speak words, he lifted spirits, he raised roofs, he shook the ground we stood on.  The tears streamed from my face onto that ground watching man after women after young person after person of color after wheelchair after gay person after republican after straight person after... kept coming down the street from the march.  It was one of the most incredible experiences I have had in my life.

Today people are urged to come out and share their story in hopes that others will come out and share their story in hopes that it will be safer, easier and ok for others to come out and share their story.

We all are children of the same universe.
We all are children of God.
We all are human beings.
We all shed the same blood.
We all require very little in life, food, shelter, water and perhaps love to make it all taste good.

To this day National Coming Out Day continues to promote a safe world for LGBT individuals to live truthfully and openly in hopes that it will get better for others.

As an openly gay man who proudly serves as an Interfaith Chaplain, I extend a hug to those thinking about coming out, it does get better.  I extend a hug to those who have come out, thank you for making it better.  I extend a hug to those who would prefer that gay people stay in the closet or go away.  Perhaps you have had food, shelter and water in your life, but no hug to make it all taste good!

Chaplain Royal Bush and Chaplain Beth Loofe are Interfaith Chaplains offering nondenominational and nonreligious care and services to all, without exception in Nebraska and Iowa. They conduct Weddings, Premarital Coaching, Couples Coaching, Funerals, Blessings, and Pastoral Care. For more information please email info@inclusivelife.org OR phone 402-575-7006.

Omaha Wedding

Congratulations Jim and Abbey.  Chaplain Royal had the pleasure and honor to be a part of their day.  Chaplain Royal said "It was obvious from day one that this was going to be a most special day, the spirit, love and life that these two shared was incredible!"

The wedding ceremony was held at Omaha's (Elkhorn) Indian Creek, a most beautiful setting with great accommodations.  (Note: the staff really was well prepared and handles many details probably not thought of by many other venues.)

Abbey and Jim shared "The ceremony went just the way we wanted.  I was especially glad we got to spend some time with you prior to the ceremony.  I felt like when you were reading the vows you knew what they meant to us.  We felt like we were being married by a friend because you had spent so much time with us.  Quite a few people came up and commented on how great our officiant was!!"

Helping each couple focus on planning a ceremony that reflect who they are, where they have been and the love they share for each other is what we are here to do.  Inclusive Life has been serving Iowa and Nebraska for over two years, how can we help you?
